Imported from Brooklyn, is the story of Distinguished Professor, graphic designer, and typographer Antonio Di Spigna’s 50-year career.  In this show, letterform is elevated to art form through Di Spigna’s signature Spencerian Script.

Born in south Italy, and raised in south Brooklyn, Di Spigna was a student at City Tech (formerly New York City Community College) from 1962 to 1964, in the Commercial Art Program. After graduating and continuing his education at Pratt Institute, Di Spigna ascended to partner in the legendary Lubalin Associates studio where he worked on all aspects of visual communication and graphic design. If you know of Herb Lubalin’s work, then you know Tony Di Spigna’s work. Di Spigna’s letterform and typographic work has been widely awarded, exhibited, and has achieved international acclaim.

This show is comprised of original hand-drawn type development sketches on tracing paper, fluid Spencerian Script letterforms and finished printed pieces, spanning Professor Di Spigna’s long career. The work on display has special significance to our B.F.A. program because it has been donated by an alum to our department, and through subsequent annual gifts will become the Grace Gallery’s first permanent collection. The Communication Design department would like to thank Professor Di Spigna for this generous gift that positions our B.F.A. in the list of programs with archives aligned with creative masters like the Lubalin Center at Cooper Union, The Tom Carnase archives at RIT and The George Lois Archive at City College.
