Event Description:
I shall discuss the effects of using entangled states for quantum interferometry showing that such states enhance the sensitivity of interferometric measurements. Examples from quantum optical interferometry and from atomic interferometry with cold atoms and trapped ions will be discussed. Also to be discussed is the use of a quantum observable having no classical analog. The observable in question is, in the case of light, the photon number parity operator while for atoms and ions it is the parity operator associated with representations of the Lie group SU(2). Such parity operators used as observables realize the optimal sensitivities obtained from the quantum Fisher information.
